ilisp-5.12.0 + gcl hang

Hi,
I've tested ilisp-5.12.0 with xemacs and emacs, using gcl as the
inferior lisp. Trouble in both cases.
Under xemacs, it gets as far as "Started initializing ILISP" and hangs,
running the cpu usage to 90%. Xemacs is unresponsive to signals.
Rebuilding for emacs just gives a segfault.
The behavior is the same for gcl-2.4.3 and the cvs head (sometimes
called gcl-2.5.0). The xemacs version is 21.4.8. The test version of
emacs is 20.5.1. The OS is RedHat linux 6.2.
I'd be happy to look into what is going wrong in gcl, but could use some
hints on where to start.
