OK, I can nail down the problem a little bit: Another server of mine has Emacs 20.7, also a recent CVS ILISP version and the same pre-18d CMUCL. I don't see the problem there, so it doesn't seem to be related to pre-18d. I guess it's related to Emacs 21.x although I unfortunately can't confirm that the two ILISP versions are equal. I didn't keep track about when I downloaded and installed them. If I have a bit more time I will replace both of them with the current CVS version and report my results.
