I realise this is a pain for you, but the changes have been made to fix
issues with "modern" or lowercase readers.

Although this is scant comfort, IIRC common-lisp-user is mandated by
ANSI and as such Liquid is not conforming. One possible way round this,
however, is to define the package -- using the in-package form -- at the
start of the file.

Another approach would be to look at the cvs version -- or if you are an 
XEmacs user I can sort you out with an (experimental) cvs based package. 
This would be interesting as there are some additional fixes commited in 
cvs that are there to sort buffer problems. It would then be possible to 
set the fallback-package to "LISP-USER" -- or whatever is needed.

Sure. As does cmucl, allegro, lispwork and sbcl. (I know because I have
access to implementation of all of these but not -- unfortunately --
liquid).
