ilisp/emacs eats processor cycles

I'm using ilisp as an interface to CMUCL.  I often run commands that
take several minutes for the compiled code to execute.  When I C-c C-e
to eval one of those commands, I initially get a "busy" cursor from X
windows for the emacs window.  Top shows that emacs and lisp are each
getting about half the cycles.  If I hit C-g in emacs, I can type in
the emacs again, and the usage of emacs goes down to 25-35% of the
cycles, but that's still way too high.  When the job finishes, the
machine idles --- neither lisp nor emacs are using many cycles.

Is this a known problem?  Any fixes?  I hate the thought that ilisp is
slowing me down by ~30%.
