The Rete algorithm on which Lisa is based is memory-intensive because
it trades memory for speed.

There was a recent comp.lang.lisp thread about someone switching to
something different from Lisa because his knowledge base had grown too
large.  Unfortunately, I don't remember neither the size of his
knowledge base, nor the system he chose as an alternative to Lisa.

I have personally worked on Lisa systems with up to about 500 facts
(with an average of about 3-4 slots) and 100 rules (with an average of
2-3 conditional elements).  I use CMUCL under Linux, and performance
was acceptable for my needs (e.g. up to about a few thousand fired
rules per second).
