Make and automake

I read Noel mentioning a Make in Scheme recently. Why not
start with automake? I think more people hate it and the
GNU project is asking for a version in Scheme anyway.

(Automake is currently in perl, so I suspect being able to read
perl might help to understand some of the fiddly bits. Even so,
I don't really know the concepts behind it.)
