Back in the early 1980's, members of my CMU Common Lisp research group --
primarily Rob MacLachlan -- developed an Emacs-like text editor in Common
Lisp called Hemlock.  When DARPA stopped our funding for work on Lisp, the
CMUCL code successfully made the jump to the open-source world, but Hemlock
didn't thrive -- people preferred to use the somewhat more featureful Gnu
Emacs or Xemacs editors as the text-based user interface for CMUCL.

The Emacs command set is now deeply embedded  in my spinal cord, So I
really want to stick with that and not learn a new editor.

P.S.  Xemacs was developed at Lucid Inc. by Jamie Zawinski, who also was
part of our CMU Common Lisp research group for a while.  He was still in
high school at the time.
