Just an update: Based on additional info from Robert Smith and some others on this list, it looks like maybe the Lem editor package, with a current SBCL installed, could be the solution I'm looking for, at least for now. It seems close enough to Gnu Emacs that I won't have to radically re-program my editing reflexes to use it, and it shouldn't be too hard to import a few of the Emacs customizations I use. I'll try this sometime soon and let you all know how it goes.
