You say everything has been tried but you fail to say what exactly what has
been tried.

My stab in the dark is that if you are using username/password on a news
server then it's likely the server is also using SSL to authenticate you.
That would require the SSL check box to be ticked and port 563 to be
selected on the server tab, in settings.

If that doesn't fix it then add a second server and try these settings 

freenews.netfront.net
port 119
no SSL
no username
no password

just to see if there's another issue involved, like a firewall.
