It is the IMAP server's responsibility to mark messages as read, and Cone reflects the message status, as reported by the IMAP server. This appears to be a bug in Gmail's IMAP implementation. Gmail's IMAP server does not mark messages as read, after their content is downloaded by the client using the FETCH (BODY[]) command.
