Thanks; that gave me enough to locate it. This was already noted, and fixed in post-4.99 development at 48de6fe98d ( https://code.exim.org/exim/exim/commit/48de6fe98d29 ). You could

* continue with your current workaround until 4.100 arrives
* take the latest 4.100 RC
* attempt to backport that commit to your 4.99
