Did Exim perhaps get HUP'd/restarted during that period, thus making your
clamd ACL configuration kick in?

To be honest, I'd ignore your users on this one - you know better than
them. However, if you do send notifications I'd very strongly suggest
*not* putting the alleged "sender address" on them, because otherwise your
users will start e-mailing the purported senders saying silly things like
"why did you send me a virus?" or "please disinfect and resend" which just
wastes everyone's time.

I suspect when you do that, your users will soon realise the utter
pointlessness of receiving notifications!
