quote the www-data, as in:

mysql> GRANT ALL ON vexim.* TO "www-data"@localhost IDENTIFIED BY
'thebigsecret';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.06 sec)

mysql> quit
Bye
[wash@FreeBSD-8 ~]$ mysql -uwww-data -pthebigsecret vexim
