You probably want to double-check all the regexps - I had a lot of headaches
on the 'compatible on/off' issue when I originally did that chunk. There
was some real on-crack interaction with one of the regexps (I think it was
the 'select a key' code), but I don't remember glomming into the idea of
forcing 'compatible=off'.....
