indeed, and nobody is seriously questioning that "better safe than
sorry" approach. 

there just seems to be a race somewhere - and it's a bit elusive:
i couldn't reproduce the lockup on my machines, even with the 
submitter's defaults (but a different window manager).

but: the submitter's problem went away immediately when he 
disabled the separate sequences window.
as the sequence window code doesn't produce a lot of debug output,
the submitter's logs don't show much useful info...

any idea how to proceed best with that problem?
