Sorry for your troubles - they can mess up your day!

I'd look for config issues and such before I messed around with
source codes.

What does ps show about any children of your main EXMH session?
Maybe it's waiting for a child who's gotten confused...

FWIW, for the last 14 yrs my main workstation has been straight
Debian running "unstable" and "testing" with only a few
occasions where I got bitten (recoverably) by bleeding-edge
related issues, so if you do grab the sources don't let the
names scare you.  Current versions of a couple relevant packages
on that x86 box are:

 exmh 1:2.8.0-4
 nmh  1.5-release-5+b1

...and all's well here...  :-/
