yes. i'm the debian maintainer of it, and i use it daily (well, the 
newest revision -4).
however, i'm using it on *debian* - i have no idea whether mint 
just republishes my debian work or does any further rebuilding or 
what have you. i also don't know what kind of surrounding infrastructure 
mint provides you with, ie. what tcl/tk versions and so on.

debian hasn't released since -1 went out, so of course -4 is not in stable. it
is, however, working fine.

check the preferences. what do you use for background processing?

enable debug log (in hacking support), let it run and hang and
investigate that log. 

check the exmh processes: how many, what do they
do?  strace is your friend.  

make sure that you don't use xhost, make
sure nothing fiddles with it on your behalf (see also the keep xhost
list clear option in background processing, and its documentation) 

check the options in html viewer and www, exmh might not be proxy-configured
and attempt to download stuff referenced in your mails.
