i *think* you should have seen a brief exmh status error display, but
you definitely should have seen something if you enabled the debug log
(under "hacking support"). [at least that's how i read the URI_StartViewer
code in uri.tcl]

that looks very wrong! there is a fixed set of choices for viewers,
and 'firefox' is not a recognized viewer flavour - at least not in stock ex=
mh.
did you manually massage your defaults file? the preferences gui should not
have offered 'firefox' as a choice.

i'd change that back to 'netscape', because...

...your 'netscape' command has the correct invocation for firefox.

(well, you might want to amend it to
firefox -remote openURL($xuri,new-tab)
to get a tab instead of a new window...)
