I did not have a application/x-msword; in my mailcap so I don't know 
how my exmh (2.7.2, BTW) is getting the idea that it's msword.

NEway, I set 

application/x-msword; kpdf -geometry 900x1100 "%s"

since it appears that it's always pdf. I searched through all my old 
messages. They seem to come from Thunderbird client.
