That doesn't sound right, it shouldn't have lost the / in there...

Hmm... I wasn't able to replicate it via obvious means, but this '#' gives me
not-warm-fuzzies:

mkdir ~/tmp/x ; cp picture.jpg ~/tmp/x/

Did you do the mkdir as root, and leave tmp/ and/or tmp/x with unreadable
permissions?

(Though actually, creating a root-owned tmp/x that was unreadable resulted
in a *different* odd failure mode I need to chase down and fix)
