you must specify the full path to the list dir and .qmail files dir when
creating a list.

Also, I assume you did this as root, which is fine, but you'll need to
chown the files created afterwards.

read the following manpages for a fairly clear picture:
qmail-send
qmail-lspawn
qmail-local

and also read all of the files in /var/qmail/doc, especially the PIC.*
files as they illustrate qmail's logic.

only if you don't have a local user named with the local part of the
list name.
