Alec,

When I was initially setting up getmail with Gmail and I had a lot of mail
that I wanted to move, I used max_messages_per_session to limit the number
of messages downloaded, and then just ran it multiple times. Getmail wasn't
failing, I just felt it reasonable to limit the size of the batches I was
downloading. This might be of use in your case as well.
