Actually, you're not.

There is no getmail v6 yet.  That is maintained by someone(s) else with no
input from me, and you have hit a bug they introduced.  The GPLv2 gives them
the right to fork, but I really wish they would use a different name, because
it keeps confusing users like this.

Use real getmail -- current version is v5.15 -- and you won't have this
problem.  getmail handles unicode correctly.
