Ah hah!  I'm running debian, this is the package I installed.  I don't
see getmail5 packaged for debian which is strange.

getmail/stable,now 6.14-1 all [installed]
  transitional package

getmail6/stable,now 6.14-1 all [installed,automatic]
  mail retriever with support for POP3, IMAP4 and SDPS

I can concur that real getmail does NOT have this issue.  I will move
to getmail5.  It would be really great if someone could package this
up for debian.  It's a little odd that there's a getmail6 which one
might think is better!  But not your fault.
