I'm confused by your response - or more to the point, I think you're confused.

If by "that" you mean the "incorrect username or password" error message, I am
99.9999% sure that mail.spectrum.net is indeed the correct hostname to use,
especially since Spectrum support said so.
When you have it configured this way, and you see that error message, it means
getmail is working correctly! Your problem really, truly, accurately,
definitely is a credentials problem - you have not configured getmail with the
correct username and password for your account on that server.
This is something no one here can fix for you. You need to contact Spectrum
and figure out what the correct values are. I gave some possibilities in my
previous message, but those are just guesses - you need to talk to Spectrum to
figure this out.

No, it is *not* fine.

You don't get that because the program is failing to connect to
"spectrum.net", because that host is not running mail services, and has
firewalled off those ports, so your computer never gets the message "no
program listening on that port".

That would cause getmail to die with a fatal error and a very clear error
message before it ever tried to connect to the server. This is unrelated to
the "incorrect username or password" errors.

Do you see there where it says "user aborted"? That is *not* telling you
everything is fine. What the above output is telling you is that getmail
*tried* to connect to spectrum.net, but *could not get a response*.
You then aborted getmail because it wasn't doing anything visible. Note that
"you aborted it" could include "crond aborted it" or some other program, if
that's how you're running getmail.
To be very, very clear: in your configuration, setting hostname to
"spectrum.net" is WRONG. You are misinterpreting getmail's output if you
believe this is somehow "success, but no messages found" - getmail is
absolutely, positively NOT saying that.
You need to use "mail.spectrum.net", whereupon getmail works perfectly. You
just need to solve your username/password error by talking to Spectrum,
because this problem is completely unrelated to getmail.
Nothing you change in your setup will help until you talk to Spectrum and get
your credentials figured out.
