courier will be missing in the next stable version of Debian and Devuan

If something is not done, courier will be missing in the next stable version of Debian and Devuan. I know this will not be of interest to a certain part of you. But I think that even if you do not use Debian, Devuan or derived, this is bad because the number of courier users and installations will be reduced if it is no longer easily installed from the official repositories.
My interest is Devuan (Debian with sysv instead of systemd). The official source of courier includes a "debian" folder but it is heavily dependent on systemd and compilation fails on Devuan. If I had succeeded, I would not write this email, but would write another different mail exposing the necessary changes to achieve it.
If nobody uploads a package to the official Devuan repository and if it is not easy to create a package that work with sysv from the official upstream source, unfortunately it will not be feasible to continue using courier as mail on the servers working with Devuan.
It would be ideal to modify the official source (maybe small changes limited to only files inside the "debian" folder but I don't know) so that creating a package using the included "debian" folder, courier can be built without strict dependency on systemd but rather supports different inits for example using init-system-helpers as many packages do in Debian. This does not cause the package to be in the Debian/Devuan repository, but it makes it much easier than anybody packages and uploads to the repository.
If there is no interest, time or desire for the above (for example, because the main development does not want to devote time to this or because it implies major changes in the source that do not want to do), hopefully someone with knowledge and time could make the necessary changes as patches to apply on the original upstream source and this allow to create a package in the official Devuan repository.
