When I look at the logs there is no errors logged.

/etc/openldap/slapd.conf
has:
rootdn	cn=Manager,dc=myhosting,dc=example"
rootpw  {SSHA}hash_string
/var/tomcat/webapps/jamm/WEB-INF/jam.properties
contains only the following entries:
jamm.ldap.search_base = o=hosting,dc=myhosting,dc=example
jamm.ldap.root_dn = cn=Manager,dc=myhosting,dc=example
jamm.ldap.root_login = root
