How can I confirm that courier-pop3d is actually makin a connection to the
ldap server?

I assume you mean authldaprc

I have this set to the name of the LDAP parameter to query, namely:
LDAP_HOMEDIR    homeDirectory

> LDAP_MAILDIR            domains
> LDAP_CRYPTPW            {CRYPT}6J/VhSVpaAOsY
This is supposed to be the user's password and as such should also be the
name of the LDAP field:
LDAP_CRYPTPW     userPassword
