I think in this case we should not delete the old account.
Otherwise it will just loose all his emails/folders,
and perhaps will have to enter a new password if we don't know
the old one.

That's a valid reason.

in normal day-by-day operations it's nasty to have to do something, then wait
5 minutes and continue the work.
Usually in those 5 minutes you get plenty of phones or other problems
and then you either don't have time to add the alias after 5 minutes, 
but rather after some hours. Or what happens often, you just forget
about adding the alias afterwards...

Yes, but the client then argues that it was that mail who had
an order for 100'000 US$ in it, and we just rejected this one...
(How likey this is does not matter to the client :-(  )

The transition from alias to mail is not a problem,
since we don't loose any files.

But the conversion from mail to alias should still be
possible, just flag the mail as deleted and allow the creation
of the new alias, even when there is a DELETED account.
