Can you look at the tomcat logs and see if there are any exceptions tossed?
 That'll help us figure it out.

dovecot and/or courier-imap won't let a user log in until a directory has
been created for them.  Postfix will do that the first time it delivers mail
for that user.  Most of the "a user can't log in" is due to that issue.
