It seems this is the way GCC was always supposed to work from what I
see. Google and you can find stuff about it. It seems 3.4.6 is the first
version to "get it right" except it screws up.

Search my entries in the list a few months ago about this issue.

Either you have to do what you did or go back to 3.4.5
