odd quoting of plain text messages for reply

Suppose I send myself a msg with Mahogany
(or any other plain text client).
The only content is: Test.
It arrives in my inbox, and I press 'r' to
reply to it. Here is what I find included
for my reply (indenting added):

I suspected template corruption, but my template seems
unchanged.  So what is going on?
