odd quoting of plain text messages for reply

Suppose I send myself a msg with Mahogany
(or any other plain text client).
The only content is: Test.
It arrives in my inbox, and I press 'r' to
reply to it. Here is what I find included
for my reply (indenting added):

    On Sat, 31 Jul 2004 23:42:19 -0400 [email protected] apparently wrote:

    > Date: 
    > Sat, 31 Jul 2004 23:42:19 -0400
    > From: 
    > [email protected]
    > Subject: 
    > a test
    > To:

I suspected template corruption, but my template seems
unchanged.  So what is going on?
