Actually, it uses a combination of that and 
[email protected], with the fraction of mail using 
per-user addresses a tunable parameter, for the benefit of MTAs that don't 
handle single delivery messages efficiently.  (If your MTA is qmail, it 
knows how to use qmail's VERP feature to get per-user addresses all the 
time.)

As I would think would be obvious, the point of putting the message number 
into the bounce address is to help the bounce processor tell which message 
bounced.  MJ2's bounce handling rules typically say something like remove 
an address after five consecutive bounces, and the message number lets it 
discount multiple bounces for the same message like the ones that old MTAs 
send saying that it's been working on your message for an hour and will 
keep at it.

In any event, as we've been telling you over and over, MJ2 sends perfectly 
normal, standard-conformant mail, and it does what it does for good 
reasons.  If you don't like the way that your inbound MTA handles it, you 
can easily fix your MTA.
