This sometimes works, but sometimes doesn't, even though the "PGP MESSAGE" lines are clearly visible in the body.  In my experience it mostly depends on user agent of the mail and i guess some settings on the other side.

I usually get the problematic messages from this user agent:

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/24.5.0

When it doesn't work it is just the obscure "cannot decrypt for some reason message".

The workaround is, to use a shell -- and as you said it is not ideal.
