Mulberry on kubuntu 12.10?

Hi folks,

I've been happily using Mulberry on Kubuntu 11.10 (64bit) and am trying
to switch to a clean install of (not an upgrade to) 12.10 (64bit). I've
installed Mulberry and clicking on the shortcut icon I've added to the
application launcher does nothing, and clicking on the shortcut icon
I've added to the panel results in the following error:

      KDEInit could not launch '/usr/local/sbin/mulberry'

Trying to launch it from konsole results in another error:

      $ mulberry
bash: /usr/local/sbin/mulberry: No such file or directory

which seems weird, the binary is right there on my path with the same
permissions, etc., as in my 11.10 installation. Has anyone got Mulberry
running on k/ubuntu 12.10? Or does anyone know of any problems that make
it impossible (missing or changed libraries in the distro, or whatever)?
Having to stop using Mulberry would be extremely distressing.

And if it's the case that 4.0.8 is getting too long in the tooth for
current linux distros, does anyone know whether Martin Dietze's v4.1d1
might be a suitable replacement? If I have to learn github to keep using
Mulberry I'll give it a shot...

Thanks,

Dan
