Yes, it's dead, sad to say. I tried several clients and ended up using Thunderbird, because it allows me to create local folders. I use those a lot, and they're on Dropbox. MUAs are a lot like OSes. Personal preference is just that. It always seems so silly to me to argue about which one is "best". The "best" of anything is what you will enjoy using.
