FWIW, I've had 'bind editor <delete> delete-char' in my
config for more than 20 years.  It's been so long that when
I saw this change I wondered how the current default hadn't
driven me mad.  Apparently, it did. :)

I don't know if I now use ^D or delete in the editor.  It's
the sort of thing I do without thinking.  I surely used
delete when I initially started with mutt, as I didn't know
to remap ctrl to a saner spot on the keyboard and use such
combinations consistently across many terminal apps.

Any change in a default will disrupt someone's habits, of
course.  I would guess -- and a guess is all it is -- more
new users are surprised that delete behaves as backspace.
