Well, Jim said that on his system, the key named "backspace" (or with
a leftward arrow) on his keyboard sends the DEL character. But this
character is normally recognized by ncurses as the <BackSpace> key,
not the <Delete> key. Moreover, Jim also said that the Delete key of
his keyboard sends ^H (instead of the usual escape sequence). So I
suspect that Jim will never get the curses <Delete> in Mutt, and the
change won't affect him.
