Well if both keys on his keyboard really send the same keycode,
then he should use xmodmap and/or dumpkeys/loadkeys to adjust the
keycodes accordingly.

For example, though totally different thing, the G key of my old
laptop stopped working several weeks after i bought it.  But
i bucked and did not send it in for repair, instead i was using it
from May 2019 to end of June 2026 with an adjusted xmodmap in my
~/.$HOSTNAME.xmodmaprc plus a system-start adjustment in my
/root/hosts/$HOSTNAME/system-hook
