So I'd actually start using my new pinerc (and keep the old one to 
continue this investigation), if I could figure out this issue.

I can resize my Terminal window, and pine does see it getting wider, but
it's still always offset from the right edge by quite a ways -- maybe 30-40
chars.

Any ideas?
