The big delay is simply right after typing in my password.

It's when pine is getting the messages to show the INBOX.   (A similar 
delay happens when I try to sort by thread the first time, for seemingly 
identical reasons.)

How do I know where to truncate the log?

i.e. do you want me to send the whole log file to you?
