More attachment handling

Recently there was some discussion on opening PDF files.  I've encountered 
a related issue in that some mail programs (notably Apple Mail, but 
reportedly also Outlook) stuff attachments into outgoing messages as 
generic OCTET-STREAM data, thus rendering my mailcap settings impotently 
inept.

The files themselves run the gamut from Word, Excel to image file types, 
yet they come through as APPLICATION/OCTET-STREAM and not what they really 
are.  Apple and Microsoft seem to assume that file endings (or appledouble 
and resource forks?) are enough reason for them to run afoul of the RFC's 
for MUA's, leaving poor PINE to encourage me to save and open these 
instead.

I know this is the fault of the MUA and not PINE as the recipient (and 
email program of choice), but is there something for PINE akin to this (or 
otherwise possible with a script and a tweak of my mailcap?):

The PINE docs discuss, but then brush off, OCTET-STREAM attachments and 
how to deal with them (again, it's the fault of the MUA's and not PINE). 
I could run after every single person that sends out email to fix their 
settings or use a better email program (I've almost eradicated my world of 
TNEF/Winmail.dat files!!!), but...
