Is this violating any RFCs? 

I strongly suggest you write this up as a bug at bugreport.apple.com
(You only need a free 'online' account if you don't already have one.)

*personally*, I'd say if you can avoid mentioning pine and describe the issue
more generically, I surmise it would be taken more seriously.  (So they 
don't think this is a problem "only for those weirdos still using text
email programs")

If you do write it up, can you send me the bug #?
