Quoting a friend (I can't take personal credit, if any is due): "You can have Pine search and flag folders when you are at the Folder List level. Just press the semi-colon key, followed by T for text, followed by C for folder contents. Pine will flag any folders where it finds the search string. Unfortunately it doesn't go down into the folders and flag the individual messages. This definitely works when using Pine in direct-access mode, IMAP (and therefore Maildir) access seems a little flakey for searches."
