I run several Dovecot servers and I have seen this too, sometimes even on folders that are archived and not changing. I suspect that it is a bug in Dovecot, since I think this is Pine's warning that the IMAP server is not following the IMAP standard. I also don't think it's the only bug in Dovecot: sometimes I get several messages combined into one, and when using Evolution against Dovecot servers, it would regularly crash Dovecot when appending mail to a server. I'm rapidly losing faith in Dovecot.
