Pine does not work well with UTF-8. It believes all characters are 8-bits 
wide. The patched version sort of works but has some problems. We expect 
to be releasing an alpha version of alpine sometime this month which does 
support UTF-8 reading and composing. Alpine is based on pine. A small 
amount of information on alpine is available at
