How to read German special characters with pine

Hello, Iam using pine program on Linux for mail. I have added the following .pinerc and in /etc/pine.conf file to read the German special Characters (Ex : Ü) ~/.pinerc character-set=ISO-8859-1 /etc/pine.conf character-set=ISO-8859-1 Iam not seeing the character correctly.
