Sorry Andrea, I do at least partially appreciate your point (you do not
want to spend too much time in installing a patched version on each of
the machines on your LAN, and/or do not want to spend time in re-applying
the patch when you upgrade to new versions). For instance here at my site
we have a policy that in general, for utility software like pine, we do
install only the version coming with the latest SuSE distribution (I've
just realized that should be a patched version, see below).

In the past I sometimes upgraded from source for my personal use, but now
it's a long time I do not do it. And for instance I'd never explicitly
applied any of the patches by Eduardo Chappa which are often advertised on
this mailing list (however, looking at his site just now, I realized that
my Suse/4.61 pine should be patched, since for instance it provides the
option to select messages by content of an header keyword).

On the other hand, I am not aware that what you want (and which I rephrase
as "some configuration option to be able to bind a macro of commands to a
single key") is supported in plain pine (up to 4.61 which I have), nor I
can find it in the site of Eduardo Chappa, or on Infinite Ink (two
precious resources).

Maybe with that rephrasing your request would be clearer for the others.

I have sometimes felt the lack of a macro definition (other than the
one-shot "initial keystroke" setting) e.g. there were case I'd liked to
assign to a single key a "pipe" command into some script, but so far I
managed to live without.

If I understand you, what you want is just a macro to save a message to a
particular folder. In this case typing S and the folder name (which is
usually remembered) seems not so terrible.

Considering that one can use the aggregate command to do that on several
messages at a time.

Actually the sequence A S newspam A D X is something I do every morning
to move the few residual spam (usually in some procmail filtered
folders) into a folder which then I export to a common area, where a
crontab picks it up for training the spamassassin bayes filter
(site-wide). A macro would save me some typing, but I can live with it as
it is now.
