No. GNU bash is bloated, buggy and has inconsistent
behaviour, for example a non-deterministic tab completion,
and, it's not being actively developed (except for program-
mable tab completion...).

There's mksh, which IS actively developed, focuses on
good script using (instead of interactive, but NOT leaving
the interactive aspect away, e.g. recently, UTF-8 support
was improved), is MUCH faster, MUCH LESS bloated, and can
do _more_ things than GNU bash (e.g. co-routines).
Besides, it's freely licenced, not under the restrictive GPL.

Now, are you having issues with "^Z and then type pine
again", or concurrent access in general? (I suggest that,
if your server is uw-imapd and you have powers to do it,
you change to the mbx format... I did so with sendmail and
everything was much smoother afterwards). If it's just the
^Z issue, you can work around it by aliasing pine to some
script which either does pidfile tricks or uses the pgrep
command, which is probably included in your *nix distribu-
tion, to find if pine's already running.

However, I'd prefer the "convert INBOX to mbx format" solu-
tion anyway, as it allows concurrent access and newmail de-
livery. Just replace mail.local (or similar) with dmail/tmail.
