PINE DSN and sendmail command

Greetings,
So, here something that i'm not too clear on about PINE + DSN:
For enabling delivery status notifications to work, PINE has to pass a
combination of success, failure, or delay to the sendmail command via the -N
flag. But how does it do that if the sendmail command is statically configured
in the global pine.conf? Is there some dynamic option, similar to $DSN in
SqWebMail, where PINE can pass this info?
